In this week’s instalment of our series “People of West Cork”, meet Sharon Thomas - a West Cork native and owner of Celtic Knot Events. Celtic Knot is an Irish based wedding and event planning company located in the heart of West Cork specialising in Boho, Festival and Creative style weddings.
We asked Sharon:
“What makes West Cork special?”
West Cork is incredibly peaceful, with breathtaking green hills, mountains, and hidden treasures that make every corner unique and beautiful. The food here is amazing, and the people are so warm and welcoming—it’s a place where you can truly feel at ease.
What does West Cork mean to you?
West Cork means home to me. It’s a place of immense beauty and comfort, where I feel grounded and connected.
West Cork holds so many treasures, but these are my absolute favourites:
1. Gougane Barra
Gougane Barra is pure magic—peaceful, serene, and so close to my heart. It’s a place where I feel calm and grounded, a sanctuary for my soul. I love visiting the beautiful little church to find headspace, connect with myself, and feel close to loved ones who have passed on. Lighting a candle for each of them is such a comforting ritual.
2. Glengarriff
Glengarriff is a gem. The woodland walks are breathtaking, and taking a boat to Garnish Island to explore its stunning gardens is a must. After my walk, I always stop by the Sugar Loaf Café in the village. Áine, the owner, makes everyone feel like an old friend. The banter and warmth of the place are unmatched, and the coffee and cakes are simply divine. The Irish breakfast is an absolute treat too!
3. Clonakilty
The colourful town of Clonakilty is a joy to explore. It’s full of unique shops, delicious restaurants, and a tranquil charm that makes strolling through the streets so special. I love the wellness events held at The Studio on Spillers Lane—they’re always worth checking out.
Honourable Mention: Bantry
Bantry is foodie heaven for me! My favourite spots include The Stuffed Olive for coffee and cakes, Forest and Flock for the best hot chocolate, and Teasy’s for an amazing breakfast or lunch. For shopping, I love boutiques like Burke’s, Solo, The Webb, and The Boutique. As a self-proclaimed magpie, I’m obsessed with the accessories at SeaDog, though it doesn’t do wonders for my bank account! For crystals, Meara and Morley on Glengarriff Road is my little haven, and it’s conveniently across from Organico Health Store, where the tomato and fennel soup is divine. Bantry Beach is another favourite spot—peaceful, serene, and with that magical sea breeze. And if you’re up for an adventure, take the ferry to Whiddy Island for an unforgettable experience. For an unforgettable getaway book the maritime hotel in bantry a beautiful hotel with fantastic food, a spa and leisure centre.
Bonus: Macroom
Lastly, a shoutout to Lynch’s in Macroom—they make the best milky coffee, just the way I like it (yes, I prefer it weak!). Their sandwiches are fantastic too, making it the perfect pitstop after shopping in Dunnes or visiting Nature’s Corner, the most helpful health store around.
