Downeen Castle, specifically its southerly tower which sits on a little island and which was formerly joined to the mainland, is located just a few kilometres outside Rosscarbery.

The tower that sits upon the rocky island possesses an undeniable allure, accentuated by its remote and inaccessible nature. Nestled amidst the rocky bay, this hidden gem remains shrouded in an air of mystery, evading the footsteps of visitors. Bound by the sea and protected by nature's fortifications, the island forms an ethereal barrier, rendering it unattainable to all who yearn to explore its secrets.

For those who seek a glimpse of Downeen Castle, it can be seen from a field on the mainland offering an unparalleled and breathtaking view of this small, but strikingly positioned ruin. It is in this visual feast, this tantalizing glimpse into the past, that Downeen's allure finds its fulfillment, forever etching its presence indelibly upon the souls of those captivated by its enigmatic charm.

What’s to love?

We love how that tower ruin is clinging to the edge of the cliff it sits on…looks kinda surreal. Beautiful at Sunrise when the sun comes up behind Galley Head Lighthouse in the distance. Watch the sun slowly casting its warm light onto the tower from the top at sunrise. Bring a flask of coffee :)

Top Tip

Unless you have a boat, the only way to see it as far as I know is to walk to the edge of the field that is just north of the tower and its small island.
